You've enjoyed his distinctive and stirring music as underscore to television movies, series and
specials on all the major networks - CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, The History Channel, TNN, TBS and others. Now collected in three CDs, capturing three distinct flavors, you can enjoy the
music of Edgar Struble any time.
Released in 1994 on Simplicity Records, Piano Country is a tasteful collection of country
standards set to lovely and simple arrangements for the grand piano. "I wanted to create a really intimate feeling for the
record," said Struble, "like I was just sitting down playing for friends in my living room." Piano Country includes familiar favorites like Dolly Parton's,
"I Will Always Love You," and Willie Nelson's, "Crazy."
No Rough Edges, a light jazz and R&B turn, evolved over several years of writing and recording for Struble. Sometimes compared with the quirky, down-home feel of Randy Newman, Struble's vocal cuts lift the project out of the traditional light jazz vein, adding a refreshing dimension to many of these original compositions. "I had a ball writing and recording this project," said Struble. "I collaborated with some of my favorite writers and that's always an exciting process. I think the fun we had working together really comes through on the record."
Struble's latest project, The Brotherhood, expands his musical
vision still further, when Struble was commissioned to capture the
sounds and emotions of Morocco. More specifically, the Brotherhood
underscores the uniquely Moroccan event, the Marathon de Sable, the most
grueling, isolating and majestic marathon in the world crossing the most
barren and daunting of all deserts, the Sahara. Struble provided the
underscore for video vignettes of the race, combining Berber tribal
music, audio bites from the race itself, and his own poignant original
score. "It is like no other music that I've composed," said Struble. "I
juxtaposed the exotic sounds of Berber tribesman singing and playing
their native instruments and my score. The result is pretty interesting
- haunting at times, prayer-like at others."
Much of Struble's music is rooted in this "prayerful" expression, the strength of his music flowing from his spiritual roots. And listeners have responded. In 1998, Ponder, Sykes and Wright, the gospel trio, recorded
When Love Comes Knockin', and it quickly climbed to #9 on the Country Gospel charts.
Other selections from these projects have underscored PBS specials as well as feature films. "Music is an opportunity to express the most important things in life," said Struble. "To me, the worth of the song is how well it captures these things, grace, love, joy, sorrow, longing, whatever it is, those spiritual elements that make us human, and make the world colorful and interesting. That's what I want to capture."
